The short version
Bellingham Heating and Cooling LLC is a family-run heating and cooling company in Bellingham, owner-operated by James McCarter. The company was registered as a Washington contractor with the Department of Labor & Industries on September 14, 2020, under registration BELLIHC808NM, and it has been active continuously since. That is the whole history. We do not claim a decade we did not work.
There is no call centre and no dispatch desk between you and the work. When you dial (360) 592-3824 you get the people who do the job. That is a genuine limitation as well as a selling point: we are not a 200-truck operation and we do not pretend to be one, so on a busy January week we will tell you honestly when we can get there.
Where we work: Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Birch Bay, Everson, Nooksack, Sumas, Deming, Custer, Point Roberts, Lummi Island, and the rest of Whatcom County. If you are on the far edge of that — Point Roberts, Lummi Island, Glacier — say so when you call and we will be straight with you about scheduling.
The name
B.E.S.T. stands for Bellingham's Energy Savings Team
Bellingham's Energy Savings Team. That is the mnemonic the owner has used since the beginning, and Call the B.E.S.T. is the line that goes with it.
One small housekeeping note, because the old site could not keep it straight: the acronym only reads correctly with the possessive — Bellingham's Energy Savings Team. The previous site also published "Bellingham Energy Savings Team" and "Bellingham's Energy Saving Team" on different pages. We standardised on the possessive form and use only that one, here and in the schema markup.
The "energy savings" part is not decoration either. Most of what we install exists to cut an electric bill: replacing baseboard or wall heaters with a heat pump, swapping a resistance tank for a heat pump water heater, and making sure the rebate that pays for part of it is one you can actually claim.
What we actually specialise in
- Ductless mini splits. Single-zone and multi-zone, in the older Bellingham housing stock that never had ducts.
- Ducted heat pumps and conversions. Including furnace-to-heat-pump work where there is usable ductwork.
- Load calculations, not rules of thumb. Sized against Bellingham's 19°F heating design temperature.
- Refrigeration. Certified refrigeration technicians, which is genuinely hard to find in Whatcom County.
Certified refrigeration technicians, in a county that is short of them
Refrigeration and HVAC overlap in theory and diverge in practice. Most residential heating companies will not touch a walk-in cooler, a reach-in case or a restaurant line, and the client's own long-standing line on this is blunt: there are not a lot of choices in this county to service or fix refrigeration equipment.
We kept that capability because it is useful to the shops, cafés and small food businesses around Bellingham, and because the same discipline — measuring superheat and subcooling instead of guessing at a charge — is exactly what a heat pump needs to hit its rated efficiency.
We pull the permit and meet the inspector
A heat pump or mini split install in this county takes a mechanical permit, from City of Bellingham Building Services inside city limits or Whatcom County Planning & Development Services for unincorporated addresses. We pull it, we schedule the inspection, and we are there for it. If a bid you are comparing does not mention a permit, ask why.
Do part of the work yourself
If you are handy, we will sell you a mini split kit, let you do the parts you can genuinely do — mounting the indoor head, setting the outdoor pad, running the conduit — and then come out to do the parts that decide whether the system lasts: the vacuum, the leak check, the charge, the electrical hand-off to a licensed electrical contractor, and the commissioning readings.
We would rather you end up with a working, warrantied system than pay us for labour you were happy to do yourself. It is also honest about the failure mode we see most: a self-installed system that was never evacuated properly and quietly loses capacity for years.
It is not right for everyone. If your panel is full, the lineset run is long, or the unit has to go on a second storey, we will say so and quote the whole job instead.
How we quote
Estimates carry a $89.99 trip charge, refunded as company credit when you accept the bid. That is deliberate. A free-estimate model means every install price quietly carries the cost of the visits that went nowhere, and it pushes a company to send a salesperson rather than a technician. We would rather charge a small, refundable amount and send someone who can measure your house.
What you get back is a load calculation, a written fixed price, the rebates you actually qualify for with the program rules attached, and the permit accounted for in the number.
Everything above is checkable
Our registration number, status, bond and liability amounts are all on the licensing and credentials page, along with a link to the state's own record so you can verify it without taking our word for it. That page also says plainly what we are not licensed to do.
