What people call us about

The furnace lights and drops out, or it short-cycles, or the burner runs and the house still will not hold temperature on a 19°F night. Behind that is either a $150 sensor or a cracked heat exchanger, and those two outcomes are very far apart. A furnace burns fuel inside your living space, so the diagnosis has to cover combustion and venting, not just whether warm air reaches the registers.

This is your job if

  • A 1990s or 2000s gas furnace that has started short-cycling or throwing an ignition fault.
  • An older atmospheric furnace in a basement, orphaned on a chimney flue after something else was replaced.
  • A propane or oil furnace where there is no gas main and parts availability matters.
  • An electric furnace or air handler on baseboard-era wiring, where the repair conversation and the PSE conversion rebate conversation are the same conversation.
  • Any furnace where you have smelled something, heard something new, or had a carbon monoxide alarm chirp.

Cascade’s rebate pages block automated retrieval and the current offerings PDF renders without its amount table. Figures circulating online (tankless $700, insulation $2.00/sq ft, duct sealing $500) come from a 2024 document and are treated as stale.

Bellingham note: We list this program because Cascade is Bellingham’s gas utility, but we will not print dollar amounts we could not verify. Confirm current figures with Cascade directly.

Check what you qualify for

Four questions. No email required, and the answer is sometimes “nothing” — we would rather tell you that now than after a sales visit.

How the job actually goes

  1. Safety questions first

If your carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, we are not the first call. Get everyone outside and call 911 from outside the house. Do not go back in to reset the alarm or look at the furnace. Once the fire department has cleared the building we will find the source. If you smell gas, leave and call Cascade Natural Gas or 911 from outside.

Your part: Get people out before equipment. Nothing about a furnace repair is worth walking back into a house with a sounding CO alarm.

  2. Flat-rate diagnosis rather than hourly billing

You get a diagnostic price up front instead of watching a meter run while a technician works out an unfamiliar control board. Our estimate terms are an $89.99 trip charge, refunded as company credit if you accept the bid. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with emergency calls answered 24/7.

  3. Ignition and control sequence

We watch the furnace run its full sequence and read whatever the board is flashing: inducer proving, pressure switch, igniter, flame signal in microamps, gas valve, limit and rollout switches, blower ramp. A dirty flame sensor and a failing pressure switch look identical from the hallway and are entirely different repairs. Short-cycling is very often airflow, not the burner.

  4. Combustion and venting inspection

This is the part cheap diagnoses skip. We inspect the heat exchanger, check draft and spillage at the diverter on atmospheric units, look at flue condition and terminations, and check the condensate trap and drain on a 90-plus condensing furnace, because a blocked trap is a classic Whatcom winter fault. If we find a cracked heat exchanger we shut the furnace down and tell you plainly, even though it costs us the parts sale.

  5. Repair, replace, or convert

We put three numbers in front of you: this repair, a like-for-like furnace, and a heat pump. At Bellingham’s 19°F heating design temperature a modern cold-climate heat pump carries the house, and if your existing heat is electric resistance the PSE conversion rebate is $1,500, or $2,400 income-qualified. If you are on Cascade gas, be aware that PSE’s gas-side rebates require PSE gas service and therefore do not apply here, so a straight furnace replacement is often the sensible answer.

Your part: Tell us your horizon. Selling in two years and staying twenty years lead to different recommendations, and we would rather ask than assume.

  6. The repair, and what to watch

Common parts such as igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, capacitors and limit switches are usually fitted on the visit. Afterwards we tell you the filter size, the change interval, and the one or two symptoms that mean call again rather than wait. If the furnace is on borrowed time we say how long we think you have.

Permits

Diagnosing and repairing a furnace needs no permit. Replacing it, or altering the venting or gas piping, does: City of Bellingham Building Services through eTRAKiT inside city limits, Whatcom County Planning and Development Services for unincorporated addresses. We pull the mechanical permit and meet the inspector; gas piping is performed by a licensed plumbing contractor and any electrical by a licensed electrical contractor.

Equipment we install

Daikin

Aurora single-zone wall-mount and floor-mount heat pumps · Atmosphera R-32 single-zone wall-mount heat pumps · MXM and MXT multi-zone outdoor units · SkyAir light commercial split systems · Daikin FIT ducted inverter heat pumps and matched air handlers

Daikin is the line we install most often, for unglamorous reasons: the ductless equipment is good, the registered parts term is long, and the seasonal instant rebates are real money on a tightly priced job. It is not the strongest sub-zero machine on the market, and at a 19°F design temperature it does not need to be. Two honest cautions: Daikin runs a large dealer program in Whatcom County, so shop the installer and the scope of work rather than the logo on the brochure. And the industry move to R-32 means an older R-410A Daikin already in your house sits on a different parts path than anything current we would quote you.

Bosch

IDS Light inverter ducted split heat pumps · IDS Premium Connected inverter ducted split heat pumps · IDS Ultra cold-climate inverter ducted split heat pumps · Climate 5000 single-zone and multi-zone ductless systems · Matched air handlers and coils for the IDS family

Bosch is a ducted-retrofit brand and that is squarely where we would use it: a 1990s house with serviceable ductwork and a dying electric furnace. One modulating ducted unit beats hanging four heads on the walls of a house that already has a distribution system, the cabinet is compact, and the bid usually undercuts a comparable Daikin FIT. Two reservations, stated plainly: the Climate 5000 ductless line is not in the same conversation as Daikin, Mitsubishi or Fujitsu ductless, and we would not lead with it. The Bosch dealer footprint in Whatcom County is also thin, which is a parts-availability question you should put to anyone who quotes it, including us.

Sized for 19°F, not for a rule of thumb

Washington's energy code puts Bellingham's outdoor heating design temperature at 19°F — colder than Sea-Tac's 24°F. We size from a load calculation against that number and spec equipment on its capacity at 5°F, because that is the figure that decides whether your auxiliary heat strips run all winter.

Bellingham sits in climate zone 4C (marine): heating-dominated, damp, rarely below 10°F. It is close to ideal heat pump territory, provided the system is not oversized.

Questions Bellingham homeowners actually ask

My carbon monoxide alarm is going off. What do I do?
Get everyone out of the house and call 911 from outside. That is the first call, not us. Do not reset the alarm, do not open windows and go back to bed, and do not try to look at the furnace yourself. After the fire department has cleared the house, call us at (360) 592-3824 and we will test the combustion and venting to find why it happened.
How do you charge for a furnace diagnosis?
Flat rate, quoted before we start, rather than by the hour. The estimate term is an $89.99 trip charge, refunded as company credit if you accept the bid. Hourly billing rewards a slow technician and punishes you for an unfamiliar control board, which is exactly the wrong incentive on a diagnosis.
Why does my furnace start and then shut off after a minute?
Most often the flame signal is failing, so the board sees no flame and closes the gas valve, and a dirty flame sensor is the usual culprit. The other big cause is a limit switch opening because airflow is restricted by a clogged filter, a closed-off return or a failing blower. A cracked heat exchanger can produce similar behaviour, which is why the combustion check is part of the diagnosis rather than an add-on.
Is a cracked heat exchanger really that serious?
Yes. It is the wall between combustion gases and the air you breathe, and once it is cracked the furnace comes out of service. We shut it down, document what we saw, and price replacement, and we will not quote a patch on it. If a contractor offers to seal one, get another opinion.
When is replacing better than repairing?
When the repair is a significant fraction of a replacement on a furnace already past fifteen years, when the heat exchanger is compromised, or when parts have become hard to get. Age alone is not a reason: a well-maintained twelve-year-old furnace with a failed igniter is worth fixing. We give you the repair number and the replacement number side by side and let the arithmetic speak.
Should I replace my furnace with a heat pump instead?
Often, yes, and Bellingham’s 19°F design temperature is well within what a modern cold-climate heat pump handles. If your current heat is electric resistance the PSE rebate is $1,500, or $2,400 with Efficiency Boost, which makes the maths lopsided. If you are on Cascade Natural Gas, note that PSE’s hybrid and fuel-switching rebates require PSE gas service and are unavailable in Bellingham, so the gas-to-heat-pump case has to stand on operating cost rather than a rebate.
Do you work on propane and oil furnaces?
Yes, and up in the foothills where there is no gas main that is a lot of what is out there. Parts lead times are longer on some oil equipment, so we would rather look at it in October than in the middle of a cold snap.
What if I cannot afford the repair?
Ask us about Opportunity Council. Their LIHEAP furnace repair and replacement programme covers furnaces, air handlers, wall heaters, baseboards and venting at no cost to eligible Whatcom County households, and you apply directly through their community office after satisfying the LIHEAP requirements. We do not administer it, and we would rather point you at it than watch you go without heat.
Can you come out at night or on a weekend?
Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and emergency calls are answered 24/7. Call (360) 592-3824 and describe what the furnace is doing, including any flashing fault code, and we will tell you whether it can wait for morning.
