The houses in Samish

Samish covers a lot of ground: 1960s and 70s tract ramblers and split-levels on the hill, newer subdivision housing on the streets toward Lake Padden, and a strip of older motels and apartment buildings along Samish Way that have been converted to student and workforce rental. The detached houses have crawlspaces or daylight basements and attached garages; the converted rental stock is small units with a single exterior wall. Lots on the hill are wooded and often sloped.

What is probably heating yours right now

The tract houses run a mix of gas furnaces and original electric forced air, with baseboard filling in bedrooms and additions. The newer development toward Lake Padden is gas-ducted or already has a heat pump. The Samish Way rental conversions are electric almost universally — wall heaters and baseboard — which puts them in the PSE conversion rebate category and makes a one- or two-head ductless system the practical retrofit.

Why this determines your rebate

Puget Sound Energy pays $1,500 — $2,400 for income-qualified households — to replace electric-resistance heat with a heat pump. Baseboard heaters, wall heaters, an electric furnace and radiant ceiling cable all count. A gas furnace does not, and because Cascade Natural Gas rather than PSE supplies gas in Bellingham, there is no PSE gas-to-heat-pump rebate either. So the first thing we ask is what is on your walls.

What makes a Samish install different

On the hill, the sloped wooded lots mean the condenser location has to account for surface runoff, needle fall, and a lineset that may run further than you would expect from looking at the floor plan. The Samish Way properties are the opposite problem: multiple small units in one building, shared walls, and an owner who needs a repeatable install detail rather than a custom solution for each unit — that is worth designing once, properly, before the first head goes on the wall. Both cases are inside city limits, so mechanical permits and inspection run through City of Bellingham Building Services.

Sizing for 19°F

Every Bellingham address shares the same code design temperature — 19°F at station Bellingham 2 N, colder than Sea-Tac's 24°F. What differs street to street is the envelope. A 1910s one-and-a-half storey with knee walls and original single glazing carries a very different load from a mid-2000s two-storey built to a modern code, even at identical square footage. That is why we run the load rather than multiplying square feet by a constant.

We know the streets

If you are near Lake Padden Park, Lake Padden Golf Course, the Samish Way corridor, we have worked nearby. Ask and we will tell you honestly what we have run into on that side of town.
