Bosch against Bellingham's 19°F design temperature
Bosch splits by model, and the split matters before you sign anything. The IDS Premium Connected is NEEP-listed for continuous operation to -4°F but retains only around 60% of its capacity at 5°F, short of the PSE ducted upgrade requirement of at least 70% of 47°F capacity at 5°F. The IDS Ultra is the model Bosch rates at 100% heating capacity at 5°F, so specify that one if the rebate is load-bearing in your budget. At Bellingham’s 19°F design temperature either unit will heat the house, which means the rebate paperwork, not the weather, decides which cabinet goes on the pad.
For reference, Washington's energy code puts Bellingham's outdoor heating design temperature at 19°F against 24°F at Sea-Tac, in climate zone 4C (marine). We size from a load calculation against that number and check capacity at 5°F, because that is the figure that decides whether backup heat runs all winter.
Specs and coverage
- Efficiency, as published
- The IDS Premium Connected is published at up to 20 SEER2 and 9.5 HSPF2 on R-454B refrigerant, landing it right on the PSE midstream Tier 3 line of SEER2 ≥16 and HSPF2 ≥9.5, with sound levels quoted as low as 60 dBA.
- Manufacturer warranty structure
- Bosch publishes up to 10 years of parts protection on the IDS family and up to 2 years on the gateway connectivity components, and its own registration page states that registration is not required for eligibility. Terms differ by model and by refrigerant version, and independent write-ups of the IDS 2.0 describe a 10-year compressor with 5-year parts structure instead. Rather than print a headline number that may not match your unit, we attach the manufacturer’s current warranty statement for the exact model on the quote.
Published manufacturer figures, checked against product and warranty documentation. Ratings belong to a specific outdoor and indoor pairing, so ask for the certificate covering the pairing on your quote rather than the top of the range.
Our take
Where Bosch earns its price, and where it does not
Bosch is a ducted-retrofit brand and that is squarely where we would use it: a 1990s house with serviceable ductwork and a dying electric furnace. One modulating ducted unit beats hanging four heads on the walls of a house that already has a distribution system, the cabinet is compact, and the bid usually undercuts a comparable Daikin FIT. Two reservations, stated plainly: the Climate 5000 ductless line is not in the same conversation as Daikin, Mitsubishi or Fujitsu ductless, and we would not lead with it. The Bosch dealer footprint in Whatcom County is also thin, which is a parts-availability question you should put to anyone who quotes it, including us.
