How long does a mini split installation take?
A single zone is typically one day on site. Multi-zone systems commonly run one to two days, and the calendar is usually driven by permits, electrical scheduling and equipment, not labor.
The short answer
One day on site for a straightforward single zone. Multi-zone systems commonly run one to two days, the same range local contractors publish for heating installs generally. The elapsed calendar is usually longer than the labor, because permitting, the electrical contractor’s schedule and equipment availability all sit in front of install day.
What happens on install day
We set the outdoor unit on its pad or wall bracket, core the wall for the lineset penetration, and hang the indoor head on its plate. Then come the refrigerant lines, control wiring and condensate, a pressure test, a deep vacuum, refrigerant release and commissioning. The vacuum is the part that takes real time and cannot be rushed, because pulling moisture out of the lines is what keeps the system from failing in year three.
What makes a job take longer
Long lineset runs through a finished 1920s house with plaster and no chases. A daylight basement head that needs a condensate pump. An outdoor unit that has to go on brackets because of slope. Multiple heads on one outdoor unit multiply the piping, and each additional penetration is another spot to detail and seal properly.
The calendar, not the labor, is the wait
A mechanical permit has to be filed, the electrical circuit has to be installed and inspected by a licensed electrical contractor before we commission, and the mechanical inspection comes after our work. Inside city limits that goes through City of Bellingham Building Services and its eTRAKiT portal; unincorporated addresses go through Whatcom County Planning & Development Services. We tell you the realistic sequence at bid time.
What we need from you
Clear access to the wall where the head goes and to the outdoor location, pets somewhere safe from open doors, and a decision on head placement made before we arrive rather than during the walkthrough. If an HOA or an architectural review committee like Sudden Valley’s has to approve the outdoor unit location, start that early, because it is the most common reason a job slips a month.
