What Rheem does in an unheated Bellingham garage at 19°F

Rheem states that ProTerra models meet or exceed NEEA Advanced Water Heating Specification Tier 3, the qualification PSE’s $1,000 heat pump water heater rebate is written against. The units carry the EcoPort CTA-2045 demand-response port that Tier 3 and Tier 4 both require on the unit itself rather than as a bolt-on adapter. The spec that matters most in an unheated garage is the ambient range: Rheem publishes 37°F to 145°F, covering a January garage that PSE would rather see stay between 40°F and 90°F. A narrower-range tank spends the cold months on its resistance elements, so confirm your model appears on the PSE Qualified Product List and file inside PSE’s 30-day window after installation.

Specs and coverage

Efficiency, as published
ProTerra hybrid electric models are rated between 3.45 and 4.07 UEF depending on tank size and configuration. Rheem also publishes 46 to 67 gallons of first-hour delivery across the range, which is the number that actually decides whether your household runs out of hot water on a Sunday morning.
Manufacturer warranty structure
ProTerra hybrid electric carries a 10-year limited warranty on most models. Performance Platinum tank models run 12 years on tank and parts when registered within 90 days of installation and drop to a 6-year baseline if nobody registers them. The RTGH condensing tankless heat exchanger carries a 15-year residential term, the longest structure in Rheem’s residential lineup.

Published manufacturer figures, checked against product and warranty documentation. Ratings belong to a specific outdoor and indoor pairing, so ask for the certificate covering the pairing on your quote rather than the top of the range.

Our take

Where Rheem earns its price, and where it does not

ProTerra is our default recommendation for a heat pump water heater in a Bellingham garage or unfinished basement, and the 120V plug-in version is the reason why. A great many houses here run a 100-amp panel with nothing left to give, and a plug-in unit sidesteps the new 240V circuit entirely. Any panel or circuit work is still a job for a licensed electrical contractor. The drawbacks are physical rather than brand-specific: it is audible against a bedroom wall, it needs a real condensate path, and it cools the room it stands in, which suits a garage and not a finished basement.
