Does PSE pay a rebate for a mini split?
Yes, $1,500 or $2,400, but only when you are replacing electric resistance heat and only if the system meets PSE’s ductless conditions.
The short answer
Yes, if you currently heat with electric resistance. PSE’s conversion rebate pays $1,500, or $2,400 with Efficiency Boost, for a ductless system replacing baseboard, wall heaters, an electric furnace or radiant cable. It has real conditions: a head in the main living area, at least three-quarters of a ton in heating mode, and fully ductless equipment.
The equipment conditions people trip over
PSE wants an AHRI-certified variable-speed mini- or multi-split with inverter technology, rated at a minimum of three-quarters of a ton in heating mode. At least one indoor head must serve the main living area, so a bedroom-only or shop-only install does not qualify. The system must be fully ductless, which explicitly includes no short duct runs from a concealed indoor unit.
The control settings are part of the deal
PSE requires electric resistance backup heat to be locked out through an outdoor sensor, with a recommended lockout at or below 35°F. The compressor lockout must be disabled or set at 0°F or below. Those two settings are how the program makes sure the heat pump, not the strip heat, actually carries the winter. Commissioning is where they get set, and it is worth confirming they were.
One rebate per residence, and DIY is excluded
The rebate is limited to one per residence, and it must be installed by a PSE Trade Ally or Recommended Energy Professional, which excludes both do-it-yourself installs and out-of-network contractors. If you are considering our DIY kit with professional commissioning, understand that path and the PSE rebate are mutually exclusive, and price the two options against each other honestly.
The upgrade rebate is a different, ducted-only program
If you already have a heat pump and want a better one, the conversion rebate does not apply. PSE’s heat-pump-to-heat-pump upgrade rebate is ducted systems only, so ductless replacements of existing heat pumps currently earn nothing. Before you count on any of this, ask us to confirm our standing in PSE’s contractor network for your project.
