Heat pump running outside a Pacific Northwest home in freezing weather

Answers

How long does a heat pump last in a marine climate?

Salt air can shorten equipment life by two to four years without corrosion protection.

The short answer

Service life here is set by exposure and maintenance more than by brand. Christianson’s Heating reports that coastal salt air in the Bellingham and Anacortes area can shorten equipment life by two to four years without corrosion protection. We will not hand you a lifespan figure we cannot source, but we will tell you exactly what shortens yours.

Why we refuse to quote a number

Every contractor’s "fifteen to twenty years" is a sales figure, not a measurement of your house. What we can point to is a published local claim about salt exposure and a list of conditions we see fail early in Whatcom County. Judge the equipment on its warranty terms and the installer on whether they inspected the site, and treat any confident lifespan promise as marketing.

What salt air does to an outdoor unit

Airborne chloride attacks the aluminum fins and the coil-to-tube joints, and once the fin stock starts to powder, heat transfer drops and the compressor works harder for the same output. Any home close to salt water sits in that band, which here means the Bellingham, Birch Bay, Blaine, Point Roberts and Lummi Island shorelines. Coated coils, corrosion-resistant cabinets and a rinse schedule are worth specifying there, and they cost less than an early replacement.

The maintenance items that actually change the outcome

Keep the outdoor coil clear of leaf litter, cottonwood fluff and moss. Keep the unit high enough off the ground that meltwater and mud do not sit in the base pan. Change indoor filters on schedule, because a starved blower raises head pressure and shortens compressor life. In the foothills, keep the unit above the snow line so the defrost cycle is not fighting a drift.

Refrigerant availability is the other clock

A system’s practical life also ends when its refrigerant becomes expensive or unavailable. Equipment is transitioning to A2L refrigerants, and older R-22 systems are already at the point where a large leak makes repair uneconomic regardless of how sound the sheet metal looks. If your unit predates that transition, factor refrigerant cost into any repair-or-replace decision.
