Heat pump water heater installed in a Bellingham utility room

Answers

Is a heat pump water heater worth it in Bellingham?

Often yes, with a PSE rebate of $1,000 to $1,100 on NEEA Tier 3 or 4 equipment.

The short answer

Often yes, if you have somewhere sensible to put it. A heat pump water heater moves heat out of the surrounding air instead of using resistance elements. PSE pays $1,000, or $1,100 with Efficiency Boost, on qualifying NEEA Tier 3 or Tier 4 units installed on or after January 1, 2026.

Where it fits in a Bellingham house

It wants air volume and it makes the space around it cooler and drier. An attached garage, an unfinished basement or a large utility room is ideal, which suits the daylight-basement houses common here. A tight interior closet is the worst case, because the unit will fight itself for air, and it also needs more headroom than the tank it replaces.

Cost and the rebate math

Angi puts installed heat pump water heaters at $2,800 to $8,000 with a typical figure near $4,200. Against that, the PSE rebate is $1,000, or $1,100 with Efficiency Boost, on NEEA Tier 3 or Tier 4 equipment installed on or after 2026-01-01. The application must be submitted within 30 days of installation. That deadline is the part people miss, so put it on the calendar the day we finish.

What changes about the install

The unit needs a condensate drain, because dehumidifying the surrounding air produces water. It needs the correct electrical supply, which is electrical work by a licensed electrical contractor. It is audible, roughly like a window fan, which matters if the tank shares a wall with a bedroom. And it takes longer to recover after a heavy draw than a resistance tank, so we look at your actual hot water pattern before recommending a size.

When we suggest something else

If the only location is a heated interior closet with no drain and no air volume, the heat pump water heater will underperform and annoy you. If you have gas and high simultaneous demand, gas tankless is worth pricing, at $2,100 to $5,600 installed per HomeGuide, though it needs venting and gas line capacity. There is no federal credit for either one in 2026.
