- What does it cost to replace a heat pump?
- $4,000 to $8,000 installed for a ducted replacement that reuses serviceable ductwork, per local published pricing. A second local source quotes $4,900 to $11,700, which reflects jobs that also include duct or electrical work.
- Repair or replace?
- Repair if the unit is under about ten years old and the failed part is not the compressor; replace if it is older, out of warranty, and the quote is a large fraction of a new system. Minor heat pump repairs are published at $150 to $650, while a compressor or coil replacement outside warranty runs $650 to $2,500 and up, which is the point at which putting the money toward new equipment usually wins.
- Is there a rebate for replacing an old heat pump?
- Yes for ducted systems: PSE’s heat pump to heat pump upgrade rebate pays $1,500, or $2,400 with Efficiency Boost. The conditions are strict — the existing system must be centrally ducted, all-electric and out of its original manufacturer warranty, dual-fuel is excluded, and ductless is not eligible at all.
- Can I reuse my existing refrigerant lines?
- Sometimes, and only after they are evaluated. Lines that carried R-22 or that have been open to atmosphere carry oil and contaminants that will damage new equipment, and line size has to match the new system. We check size, condition and integrity, then either flush and pressure-test or replace, and we tell you which before the order goes in.
- Do I get a federal tax credit for replacing a heat pump in 2026?
- No. §25C ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 under P.L. 119-21, as confirmed by IRS FS-2025-05. There is no federal credit available for a 2026 replacement regardless of equipment efficiency.
- Do you have to pull a permit for a replacement?
- Yes. A like-for-like change-out is still permitted mechanical work, and we pull the permit and meet the inspector. The issuing office is City of Bellingham Building Services inside city limits and Whatcom County Planning and Development Services for unincorporated addresses.
